I'm one of the student reps for the Australia Telescope User Committee (ATUC). Our next meeting is coming up soon on 26-27th May. If you have any questions or comments about using or the running of Parkes, ATCA, Mopra or Tidbinbilla please reply here or send me an email jacinta.delhaize at icrar.org and I will pass it on to the committee. It can be anything at all, from food to zoom modes! Constructive criticism or complements both appreciated.
I'm the other student rep, so if you think of any issues, feel free to give me a nudge as well: justin.bray at adelaide.edu.au. Or post your comment here, if you'd like it to get a bit of discussion before it reaches the committee.
Based on experience with ATCA, I think everything's pretty awesome in general! One thing I did notice however was that there seems to be a lot of information in a lot of different places (e.g. the user's guide, the guide to observing page, the whiteboard in the observers' area, MoniCA, miriad help...). Even though I've used the compact array a few times now and am getting used to the information overload, it still seems that there's a lot to surmount especially if you don't know where to look.
It would be great if there was effort put towards creating summaries of this information in some brief way, like a PDF document that doesn't go into as much detail as all the different avenues but at the same time tells users and observers where to look or who to ask. Like a "Before You Observe" kind of guide. Or maybe there's something like that already and I haven't found it?
I also think the "my ATCA" tool that's being worked on will be greatly useful once it's done and hopefully will come up soon!!
Thanks for the comment, I'll definitely pass it on :-) Also, if anyone hasn't yet seen the email, the ATUC meeting (and preceding science meeting) has been suspended until later in June to await the upcoming ATNF response to the CSIRO budget. So there's a bit more time to think of any comments...
